“I am against this war”, says imprisoned Russian opponent Navalny


The main Russian opponent Alexei Navalny, who is incarcerated and faces new charges, said Thursday to be “oppositeto the war launched by Moscow against Ukraine.

I am against this war. I think that this war between Russia and Ukraine is being waged to cover up the theft of Russian citizens and divert their attention from the problems that exist inside the country, from the deterioration of the economy“, declared Alexei Navalny at the hearing of a new trial which opened against him last week, according to a video published by the opposition channel Dojd. Alexei Navalny felt that “this war will cause a large number of victims, waste lives, and continue the policy of impoverishment of Russian citizens“. Anti-corruption activist and sworn enemy of the Kremlin, Alexeï Navalny is currently serving a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for a fraud case that he considers political.

Targeted by new charges, he has been appearing for several days in court, for a trial which puts him at risk of ten years of additional imprisonment. Last year, the movement of the main opponent of President Vladimir Putin was dismantled by the Russian authorities, who ordered it banned for “extremismand launched multiple lawsuits against its executives. Alexei Navalny survived a serious poisoning in 2020 for which he holds the Kremlin responsible.
