Paris Match: You have just been elected deputy, after a career in journalism. What effect does that have on you?
Aymeric Caron : It is a source of great pride because there is a great responsibility linked to this position. It means a lot of people trust you (20,000 in my constituency) and they expect me not to disappoint them. I am aware of the chance that is mine: to be in the hemicycle, to represent the people and to improve the daily life of the French. I am aware that I am privileged to be able to hold this position; my life path has always been articulated around the question of being useful to society.
Among your voters, there are many young people. Do you bear any responsibility towards them?
There is clearly a responsibility. They vote mostly for the Nupes, so the ideas we carry are shared by the youth. This makes sense because we talk the most and the best about the climate or retirement, for example. If young people are very present among us, we must not forget the others who voted for us – even if we know that the older electorate has voting habits more anchored to the right.
Some of them join you on the benches of the National Assembly, like Clémence Guetté or Louis Boyard (21). Can there be communication problems because of the generational difference?
Clémence Guetté has a very solid background, she has already proven herself. It is totally legit. Louis Boyard also, I find it great that there can be young people on our side. We had, for decades, a National Assembly that was not at all representative of the country, sociologically speaking, and I am happy that it no longer represents France, even if there is still work to be done. Young people have different requirements, it’s a look very much rooted in modernity. There will be no communication problems because it is human nature to dialogue, and therefore to bring people together. The Nupes program is a common program, we must not forget it and all those elected accept the idea of defending 650 measures, regardless of age, where we come from, our background. There will be no fundamental disagreements but nuances, which is positive. »

What will be your first step?
Obviously animal welfare. Many expect that from me, it’s normal. I would also like to promote children’s rights, fight against child abuse and fight for their care. I have a four year old daughter, this is something I see from personal experience. And then in my constituency it is a major problem. In my circo, we have the problem of children who live in apartments with four, five, six people; three children sleep in a room, they have no place to do their homework. I want to remedy this: having access to housing is a long-term job. A housing policy can be implemented urgently.
And the rise of the RN in all this? Whose fault is it ?
It’s scary and logical. I am from an anti-FN generation, the one who knew SOS Racisme. We were told very clearly who Jean-Marie Le Pen is. For us, in the 1980s, we morally fought the FN, even when it was 10% at the time. Thirty-five years later, you can imagine the horror that the power of RN represents for someone like me. The media helped to spread these ideas by maintaining a little music suggesting that the far right was highlighting relevant topics: Islam, veil, Muslims, insecurity, etc. Insecurity: it really exists and we must fight it, but to say that it has exploded in recent years is a counter truth belied by the figures. However, we often hear the opposite. Finally, Emmanuel Macron has a responsibility in the rise of the RN. Some of his ministers, like Blanquer, have taken up themes dear to far-right movements such as Islamogauchism.
Emmanuel Macron and his party Together, seem to be in your sights…
Together had an unspeakable attitude by comparing the RN to the Nupes, by describing our alliance as a movement that would be a danger to the republic. Do you realize, intellectually, the imbroglio? We are with people who bury the Republic: no morals, no ethics. Where there is danger is when we invert values, that means that we can disguise everything, ripolinate.
Could you discuss with the RN on certain subjects (purchasing power, pensions for example)?
The RN is anti-republican, it is a party that was created by fascists: we cannot forget that, which means that it is not a party with which I want to discuss. There may be a common vote on a set of proposals, but we do not negotiate with the RN. It is a party which does not want to help all French citizens, but which divides them and makes a completely immoral selection. It is a liberal party, without a social program; nothing on the hospital or education for example.
And with Together?
Ensemble does not want dialogue with anyone who is not one of them. They are very contemptuous and we have seen, for five years, that they have no desire for dialogue. It is a party which imposes a single power, very violently. We want to resume dialogue, their hegemony is over; they no longer have numerical supremacy, the boots, it’s over.
