On the waves of Europe 1 this Friday, January 27, Macha Méril explained the reason why she had never become a mother. The actress underwent a clandestine abortion in her youth.

“It is a tragedy that must be overcome”. On the airwaves of Europe 1, this Friday, January 27, Macha Méril confided in the greatest regret of her life. The widow of Michel Legrand never became a mother, after having undergone a clandestine abortion when the pill was not yet authorized in France. In love with a forty-year-old when she was only 16, she went to Switzerland to end this pregnancy. And according to her, this operation made her sterile since she had never been able to give birth to a child. A trauma for the actress. “I kinda object to feminists who don’t like me, because when you say ‘it’s not the only function of a woman to have a child’…”she explained in the program Culture Médias.

“It’s true, we can decide not to have a child. But I think that every woman asks herself the question one day or another. (…) I think that the desire for a child affects all women. women”, continued Macha Méril. And to come back to his intimate and personal story: “Me, I was deprived of that. I am one of the women who had a bad termination of pregnancy and I became sterile. It is a drama that must be overcome. We cannot say that it is trivial”. At 82 years old, Macha Méril still regrets not having become a mother but has drawn strength of character from it. “When you can’t, it’s a small disaster. Me, I overcame it because I have other things in life and because I made it, almost, an identity, she described. I am a childless woman. And I’m a woman who doesn’t deny that it was a tragedy.”

Macha Méril: “a break in my life”

“There really was a break in my life which was the day I knew I would never have children.she confided already on the Couch of Marc-Olivier Fogiel. There is a way of the cross necessary to arrive at very great happiness.” Happiness is in the arms of Michel Legrand that she found it. Falling in love with the composer in 1964, the actress waited until she was 74 to marry him. “He was married and the father of very young children. As for me, I had a fiancé … And we did not sleep as easily as now! a mess…”, she explained to Paris Match. Four years after the death of her husband, Macha Méril is still just as in love: “We loved each other all our lives in the end. We expected each other. (…) 50 years without seeing each other but looking at each other from afar. That’s what was our beauty”.
