“I believe he will keep his word”: Weidel wants Trump as US President

AfD leader Weidel is not really satisfied with any of the candidates in the US election campaign. Nevertheless, she has a clear favorite in Donald Trump as to who she wants to see in the White House in the future. One reason is Ukraine.

AfD leader Alice Weidel hopes that Donald Trump will win the US presidential election in November. “I’m definitely keeping my fingers crossed for Donald Trump,” said Weidel in a summer interview with ZDF. Democrat Biden is “obviously not in control of his mental faculties,” she said, referring to the latest reports on Biden’s health. Biden should not remain president any longer. “That’s absolutely unacceptable.”

Trump also promised to end the war in Ukraine by cutting off financial support to Kiev. “And I believe he’s keeping his word,” said the AfD leader. At the same time, she said she considers the US election campaign to be a “disaster”: “I would have liked to see completely different candidates running.”

In June, it was reported that two influential advisers had presented Trump with a proposal to end Russia’s attack on Ukraine. The plan is intended to get the two warring parties to agree to a ceasefire and begin peace talks.

“Trump wants to make big deals”

To achieve this, if Trump wins the US presidential election, he should tell Ukraine that it will only receive more weapons from the US if it starts peace talks. At the same time, it should be made clear to Russia that Ukraine will receive more support from the US if Moscow refuses in any way to agree to negotiations.

The head of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, has doubts as to whether Trump could actually implement his plan if he were re-elected. “Trump is someone who wants to make big deals,” Heusgen told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND). “In his first term in office, for example, he tried to solve the North Korea problem, but underestimated the complexity of the issue. If Trump were to win, however, the pressure on Germany and Europe to support Ukraine even more would grow.”
