“I can be the assistant”
Guardiola applies for a job at the DFB
So far, the name has not been mentioned when it comes to the successor to national coach Joachim Löw: Josep Guardiola. The successful Spanish coach has now jokingly applied himself. But only as an assistant – because he knows enough “outstanding coaches” in Germany.
Star coach Josep Guardiola applied with a wink for the position of assistant to the future national soccer coach. “There are outstanding coaches in Germany. They deserve a lot more to coach the German national team than I do,” said the 50-year-old at DAZN and added with a laugh: “But I can be the assistant if you want.”
The team manager of the English top club Manchester City had been asked whether he would be eligible for the legacy of Joachim Löw, who will give up his post after the EM in the summer. He then raved about his colleagues. “If I have learned something from my time in Germany – and that has solidified here in England – then it is the quality of German coaches,” said the former Bayern Munich coach: “Jürgen Klopp, Hansi Flick, Thomas Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann, Marco Rose, Ralf Rangnick, Lothar Matthäus, Dietmar Hamann and many more can do the job. “
Of Guardiola’s favorites, Klopp, Flick, Tuchel, Nagelsmann and Rose are already under contract elsewhere in the coming season. Rangnick, Matthäus and Hamann could be had; the latter two have not looked after a team since 2011.
Guardiola is at the top of the English Premier League with Manchester and facing the next league title. He won the English championship with City in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons. In the quarter-finals of the premier class, he and his team face Borussia Dortmund (9 p.m. in the ntv.de live ticker). Manchester City have never been victorious in the Champions League. The 2015/16 season ended in the semi-finals against Real Madrid. Most recently, three seasons in a row were already in the quarter-finals.
