(Boursier.com) — I.Ceram announced the obtaining of a patent in France on the sternal reconstruction interface loaded with antibiotics. The request for the North American continent is currently being evaluated. This patent filing complements the one protecting its sternal implant loaded with antibiotics, already issued in Europe and North America. These patents are part of I.Ceram’s strategy to protect its innovations in order to offer the medical profession, for the benefit of its patients, a range of innovative implants covering the indications of stabilization of the sternal wall at high risk of infection or already infected by bacteria.

I.Ceram points out that more than a million sternotomies are performed worldwide each year. This benchmark surgical procedure allows access to the heart for cardiac surgery, bypass, transplant, etc. However, sternal wound infection is reported in the medical literature as one of the major complexities that can lead to multiple surgical re-interventions, significant risks of patient death, and high public health costs. The sternal reconstruction interface is indicated for patients with significant comorbidity factors and infectious risks after the first surgical intervention.
