“I damaged my voice with Wolverine”: the Marvel superhero left his mark on Hugh Jackman

Playing Wolverine is not easy: Hugh Jackman reveals that he has damaged his voice because of the role and adds that his former singing teacher would be horrified!

Hugh Jackman spent over two decades playing Wolverine in the X-Men franchise. After having embodied the character nine times on the screen, this one left a deep mark on him and left his mark… especially on his voice!

As Variety reports, all of the superhero’s screams and snarls took their toll on the actor’s voice, who revealed on the BBC’s ‘Front Row’ show that playing Wolverine caused permanent damage to his vocal cords.

I damaged my voice with Wolverine. My falsetto isn’t as loud as it used to be and I attribute that directly to some of the grunts and squeals. My singing teacher at drama school would have been horrified by some of the things I did [en tant que Wolverine].

Hugh Jackman continued: “We learned a technique [à l’école] to shout and howl without damaging your voice. However, during Wolverine I did some screaming and screaming and other things that I think damaged my voice. I’m working on it. I work with a singing teacher and I try not to hurt myself. I put a lot of energy into both the physical movements and my vocal preparation for each role.

Ryan Reynolds/Marvel

The actor will soon be growling and screaming as Wolverine once more when filming on Deadpool 3 begins later this year. Marvel will therefore associate Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool in what will be the MCU’s first R-rated film. Hugh Jackman played Wolverine for the last time in Logan in 2017: this was to be his last appearance as the cult character.

STEROIDS OR CHICKEN?

During an interview last month on the set of “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace” for HBO, he also spoke about the physical preparation to play Wolverine, a preparation that often had harmful consequences on his body. This time he was asked if he had ever taken steroids to gain muscle.

No, I like my job. And I love Wolverine, he had replied. I have to be careful what I say here but I have been told anecdotally about the side effects. And I was like, ‘I don’t like that too much.’ So no, I just did it the old fashioned way. And I’m telling you, I ate more chicken – I’m so sorry for all the vegans and vegetarians and chickens in the world. Literally, karma is not good for me. If the divine has anything to do with chickens, I’m in trouble.

While waiting for Deadpool 3, which should be released in theaters on November 6, 2024, the entire X-Men saga can be found streaming on Disney+.
