The circumstances of the death of little Émile: a forensic pathologist gives his opinion

It is in the columns of Le Parisien that this very renowned forensic doctor, Bruno Frémont, tried to shed light on the next stages of the case. If it initially indicates that “the investigation will be more difficult» because of the decomposition of “soft parts“, he confirms the feasibility of the hypothesis raised by this former commander of the national training center for the judicial police of the gendarmerie, Jacques-Charles Fombonne, who affirms that “the body moved“. Indeed, many questions remain unanswered following the discovery of little Émile’s skull.

Was he the victim of a third person? According to the medical examiner, if the body was moved, scientists will know: “When the body has been there for nine months, the skeleton freezes in the earth and leaves its mark there.», he explains to our colleagues, confirming that if the little boy had been the victim of a fall preventing him from moving, the location of his bones could indicate it. Facts which can also confirm whether the bones were deposited at this location much later, or even only a few days ago.

This other hypothesis raised by the expert

While our colleagues from Le Parisien ask the expert if the fact that the area had already been searched by investigators surprises him, the forensic doctor explains that no: “Experience has shown us this. During long hunts, it happens that we pass within fifty centimeters of a body without seeing it.» He then returns to certain hypotheses: “Could a wild animal have moved Emile’s body? I do not believe it. They do not like the smell of man and only approach it once it has disappeared, when the corpse is degraded.» Before adding: “Was anyone able to move it and put it there? It’s possible.»

According to Bruno Frémont, the discovery of his bones will provide several answers: “First, the pathologist will look for the hyoid bone, located at the level of the cartilages of the neck, the examination of which is essential. When he is healthy, the hypothesis of strangulation is ruled out.» But first of all, this famous bone will have to be found by the investigators: “This is not an easy thing, especially since a child’s child is very small. Rodents may have nibbled on it”explains the expert. But it is not only the hyoid bone that can make the child’s body speak: “the pathologist will also focus on the remaining bones (…) He will examine each of them to find suspicious traces of impacts or fractures, particularly at the skull level.» Results which will certainly be able to rule out the criminal trail if they are negative.
