‘I don’t know why it all fell apart’: Cronenberg’s best film won’t get a sequel

According to Vincent Cassel, the sequel to David Cronenberg’s Shadow Promises will never see the light of day.

In 2007, David Cronenberg unveiled his dark thriller The Promises of the Shadow, judged as the filmmaker’s best by Internet users from AlloCiné (4/5) .

Worn by Viggo Mortensen, Vincent Cassel and Naomi Watts, the feature film immersed us in the middle of the Russian mafia. Trying to translate the diary of a young deceased mother, a midwife found herself in the hands of a fearsome Russian gang leader. She was aided by a driver and henchman from the all-powerful Eastern crime family.

Two years after the release of this film which earned Viggo Mortensen an Oscar nomination, David Cronenberg was considering making a sequel with Vincent Cassel and Mortensen. But in 2012, the Canadian filmmaker reveals that he is no longer associated with the project.

Five years later, the sequel project returns to the front of the stage with a synopsis and a title. Body Cross was supposed to start where The Promises of the Shadow left off: Kirill (Kassel) thinks he has inherited his father’s throne and is the new boss of the Russian mob in London. But the latter does not suspect that Nikolai is actually a double agent working for the Russian secret services.

Today, in full promotion of the Apple + series, Liaison, Vincent Cassel announced to the British site The Independent that the sequel to Shadow Promises was abandoned.

He declares :

[Cronenberg] had a wonderful script. We were ready to do it and I don’t know why everything fell apart. Now I don’t think that will happen again.

Nevertheless, Vincent Cassel will soon find David Cronenberg since after The Promises of the Shadow and A Dangerous Method, the director will direct the French actor in the thriller The Shrouds. Cassel will play a businessman who investigates the reasons why several graves, including that of his wife, are damaged.
