An extract from the Netflix series devoted to the life of Bernard Tapie with Laurent Lafitte in the main role shows us behind the scenes of a Classic between Olympique de Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain.
On September 13, Netflix will unveil its mini-series Tapie, a project dedicated to the life of the former businessman Bernard Tapie. Either the story of a life like no other, which will have enabled the latter to embrace careers as a television host, singer of TV shows, Minister of the Republic or even club president. of football.
No one has forgotten the year 1993 which marked the only victory of a French club – in this case Olympique de Marseille – in the Champions League final against Silvio Berlusconi’s AC Milan. This same year was also marked by the outbreak of the OM/VA affair which precipitated the fall of the Tapie empire…
A first extract from the series shows us Laurent Lafitte in the skin of the “Boss”, haranguing his players before the kick-off of a Classic against Paris Saint-Germain. Football aficionados will notably recognize Olympians Didier Deschamps, defenders Basile Boli and Marcel Desailly, and German striker Rudi Völler.
A vital match in the eyes of Tapie
A true embodiment of French success, Bernard Tapie held the position of Minister for the City in 1993 under the presidency of François Mitterrand. The national and then European exploits of Olympique de Marseille offered a formidable launching pad for the political ambitions of the businessman.
It is therefore an understatement to say that the Classic OM / PSG had a very special flavor for the latter. “I don’t want players, I want soldiers” he insists in this extract, reminding his players that this match symbolizes the opposition of the people against the Parisian elites, and incidentally his own situation in the spheres of power.
The excerpt also shows us Tapie sitting in the box yelling his instructions via walkie-talkie to his Belgian coach Raymond Goethals, when he is not directly calling out to certain players on the field.
Several game actions remind us that this Classic is more remembered for its killer tackles and altercations than for its final score of 3 goals to 1 in favor of Marseille.
The Tapie mini-series is available from September 13, exclusively on Netflix.
