“I hated”: this great execrable director with Emmanuelle Seigner, Johnny Hallyday, Nathalie Baye and Claude Brasseur

In the pages of her book, A Burning Life, Emmanuelle Seigner looks back on her life, from her beginnings in modeling to her meeting with her husband, through her first steps as an actress. She does not have good memories of her first film, because of the director.

Emmanuelle Seigner has established herself over the years as a notorious actress. At the head of a career decorated with great films like Frantic, Place Vendôme or even The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, the actress had nevertheless started far from the film sets, in modeling. But it was her decisive encounter with Jean-Luc Godard, when she was 18, who pushes her towards the cinema. According to his book, A Burning Life, it is Dominique Besnehard who would be at the origin of his meeting with the famous director. “I didn’t really care about it,” admits Emmanuelle Seigner, who nevertheless agrees to play in the latter’s film, Detective, released in 1985. “It was my first movie“, she specifies before adding: “I hated”.

A bad experience probably shared by other actors in the film, according to the words of Emmanuelle Seigner. “There were Johnny Hallyday, Nathalie Baye, Claude Brasseur, Laurent Terzieff, great actors, and Godard kept everyone waiting for hours“, recalls the actress before adding: “I did not understand that nobody protests”.

Emmanuelle Seigner: “I was not a docile girl”

According to her own words, Emmanuelle Seigner was not the conciliatory type, perhaps a little because of her young age. “Rather wild at the time, I was not a docile girl. And then I did not care. The idea of a career was light years away from my ambitions at the time”, she explains. If his experience with Jean-Luc Godard, who died in September 2022, was not a cakewalk, that in any case did not prevent Roman Polanski’s wife from persevering in the middle!
