“I lost my baby and my ex started his life again, the name of his future baby shocked me”

She didn’t expect such news. Years after having a miscarriage, a woman learned the name given by her ex-husband to her child, and it was a shock…

The loss of a child is an immeasurable pain for parents. A year after the death of her son, Églantine Emeyé spoke about this “wound that will not heal”. Women are not spared from miscarriages, like Muriel Robin at the age of 19 or the singer Sloane, victim of violence. But this woman didn’t expect her ex partner to react the way he did.

On the HuffPost, Sara Dahl tells her story: her 8-year-old daughter returns from a weekend with her father and stepmother, pregnant, and tells her the first name of her future little brother. It’s a shock for the mother: they chose Gabriel, the name they gave to their dead baby before birth, at 22 weeks. Unfortunately, this miscarriage had not brought them closer together but distanced them, to the point of separating.

This choice of name for her ex’s baby shocks her

Sara decided to call her ex-husband to ask for an explanation. He didn’t see the problem: “Yes, we love this name. For what ?”. Stunned by his nonchalant reaction, she asks him if he really doesn’t remember. “What ?”, he retorted. After asking him if he was serious, she hung up, then remembered that difficult time. Overwhelmed by grief, she wanted to give a name to her son who died three and a half months before the due date, but her husband resisted. “If I couldn’t have real memories, at least I could have this – something that would make it a little more real”, she explains. And it’s Gabriel who was chosen, the first name of one of God’s angels, like that of her husband. She expressed her sadness and her husband remained silent.

When she decided to call him back an hour later, she begged him to reconsider: there were still months before the birth after all. He replied that his wife also had a say. She then begged him to tell her that at least part of him chose Gabriel in honor of their missing child: “Lie if you have to but please tell me”. After a few seconds, he said: “I don’t need to lie […] I’m sure it’s true”. She thanked him and thought about her mourning, which was long and which still accompanies her today: “I realized that his absence will always be a presence for me”.

This pain was rekindled by the conversation with her ex-husband, but also brought them closer than ever. “I learned that grief can never be left entirely behind – you just have to handle it a little more lightly. Maybe my ex-husband found out before me”, she concludes. This silence that she took for indifference towards their son was not, and he honored their loss by naming his new child Gabriel, whether he was fully aware of it or not.
