2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick is considered by many to be THE science fiction film par excellence. Its cinematography, direction, design and story were so groundbreaking that the film continues to enthrall generations – including master directors. Steven Spielberg And james cameron.
For the documentary series James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction, released in 2018, the two filmmakers, along with other renowned directors and actors, met to discuss the genre in question. The first subject discussed was therefore the science fiction feature film directed by Stanley Kubrick and Cameron and Spielberg both expressed enthusiasm for the 1968 project. As MoviePilot reports, the Jaws creator said, among other things:
2001 had a profound impact on my life and my daily life. It was my first time to the cinema and I really felt like I was having a religious experience.
As for james cameronhe admits:I saw the film 18 times in the first two years of its release, always in theaters. And I remember at one point a guy ran down the aisle yelling, ‘It’s God! It’s God!’ And he meant it then.”
“And I had a guy in my theater who walked up to the screen with his arms outstretched and he walked across the screen”, recounted Spielberg. “People were blown away because the person disappeared from the screen, during [la séquence Star Gate] in addition.”
As a reminder, 2001: a space odyssey features a journey of astronauts, scientists and the sentient supercomputer HAL to Jupiter to investigate an alien monolith.

Likewise, james cameron also spoke with Christopher Nolan on the subject, saying: “I remember being bowled over by its majesty, as a work of art in every sense of the word. Everyone sees it as a space drama, but at its core, it’s about artificial intelligence. I mean, HAL will probably exist in our lifetime.“And given the current boom in artificial intelligence, he was certainly correct in his prediction.
The Avatar director added of remembering the sense of anticipation with which he watched each of Kubrick’s films wondering if the latter could still amaze him: “He always has. The lesson I learned from him was to never do the same thing twice. And that’s the only thing to say about Kubrick is that he always expanded into new genres and new styles.”
YET JAMES CAMERON “DINSLIKE” THE FILM
It is interesting to note that james cameron has conflicting feelings about the film, even though he sincerely admires it as a work. In another interview with The Star (via Far Out Magazine), he said:
“It’s not a movie I like; it’s a movie that I love. When I say I don’t like it, it’s because I don’t like the atmosphere of the film. I don’t like his sterility. I like movies with a bit more emotion, just like a movie to get involved in. But as a work of art, I love 2001. It had a huge impact on me at one point.”
Whether from the point of view of two directors or the public, 2001: a space odyssey left no one indifferent. A precursor, he paved the way for directors like Steven Spielberg, james cameron or Christopher Nolan and will remain an undisputed classic of the genre.
