“I slept in the street”: Chris Marques reveals his complicated youth

Five years after starting dancing, Chris Marques left his family to improve in England. If the famous dancer has good memories of this period, he happened to experience difficult times.

In 2011, Chris Marques joined the juror of Dance with the stars. Although the famous dancer has an exceptional career and has won numerous Latin dance championships, he experienced difficult times at the start of his dancing career. Five years after having started dancing, it was at the age of seventeen that Chris Marques went to England to improve his skills. Evoking its beginnings, it is in an interview granted to Public which he confided:Strangely, when I look back, it’s still good times. I had the ardor of my 18 years, that of chasing after my dreams. I accumulated jobs, for example cleaning the toilets of a fast food restaurant. But it’s true that in the first eight months of my life in England, I sometimes slept rough. Not every night, but sometimes. The insecurity is physical at such times. You are afraid of what may happen.

In a relationship for twenty-five years with Jaclyn Spencer, world champion in British standard dance, the one who became a dad on October 18, 2016 assured: “Now that I earn a good living, the real luxury is being able to shelter my family. It’s not having money that drives me, but being safe.“Last November, it was at the microphone of RTBF that Chris Marques confided in some secrets about his complicated beginnings. While he had wanted at all costs to make his parents proud, he explained: “As it was in England, there were a lot of things my parents didn’t know at all. I thought it was unfair to complain to my parents who gave everything so that I could leave. When you have dreams you have to accept that it won’t always be a straight line to the end.

Chris Marques: “It took me ten years to get where I am today”

At 43, the famous juror of Dance with the stars can be proud of the path he has traveled. “It’s not funny, but I’m also happy to talk about it today, because we are in a time where we want this immediate success. The English have a phrase that I love: ‘It takes ten years to become an overnight success’. I don’t know if I’m a success, but it took me ten years to get where I am today“, he had revealed on the radio.
