“I think we have completely lost the DNA of what I called at the time the uninhibited right,” lamented Jean-François Copé. The mayor LR of Meaux was the guest of Sonia Mabrouk in the morning of Europe 1 on Tuesday. He recalled what he meant by the terms “uninhibited right”: “It’s a right that is completely sealed off from the extreme right”, even if he admits that “today for some of our friends, it is not is more watertight”. But according to the former president of the UMP, “while being tight with the extreme right”, this right “assumes all the subjects of French reality”. The city councilor thus set out the questions of security, secularism and the management of public accounts.

“It’s all our DNA,” he said. Themes that are missing, according to him, “in the public debate”. “The problem is that if we want to systematically oppose in a radical way, we will be crushed by people much more radical than us: the extreme right and the extreme left.”

The campaign, a “big missed opportunity”

For the former minister, the right must be “in the positive”, or be in “capacity to embody a whole pillar which, in reality, should be natural in an approach of a new majority”. For him, this approach is not natural at the moment, “because those who have agreed to be poached individually have given it up”.

Regarding the latest electoral results of the so-called traditional right, Jean-François Copé conceded that “if we only count the votes in the presidential election, that is very little”. On the other hand, “if we count the votes collected at the regional, departmental and municipal levels, it’s a lot”. And to insist: “I would like us to stop thinking that only the marker of a presidential election” counts, admitting that this campaign “still remains a big missed opportunity”.
