“I want a total embargo on Russian gas and oil imports,” says Yannick Jadot

He wants to go further in the sanctions. Faced with the intensity of Russian aggression against Ukraine, Yannick Jadot, presidential candidate for the Europe Ecologie les Verts (EELV) party, is proposing “a total embargo” on the import of Russian gas and oil. “Every day, with his gas and oil exports, Vladimir Putin finances the war he is waging in Ukraine to the tune of 700 million dollars,” he continues.

The presidential candidate believes that we must “stop this war, whatever the consequences. It is peace, security and democracy in Europe that are under attack. We must completely integrate the fact that Putin already wants, we have known for years, to bring down the European Union”, he declares for Europe 1.

“Getting out of dependence on fossil fuels”

As the European Summit meets today in Versailles, as part of the French Presidency of the Council of the EU, the candidate EELV formulates his demands: “an embargo on Russian gas and oil. We have enough gas until next winter. And so, between now and then, we have to organize ourselves. Obviously, if that were to happen, because we can also imagine that the balance of power will stop the war, we could resume imports. But if that were to happen, we will indeed need a little sobriety and massive deployment of renewable energies,” says Yannick Jadot.

To compensate for the rise in fuel prices caused by the war in Ukraine, the EELV candidate sets out the following measures: “an energy check of 400 euros for six million families in difficulty, a check of 100 euros for middle-class families and companies covering 1,000 euros in fuel when we organize carpooling.”

Yannick Jadot also believes that we must “seize this opportunity to get out of dependence on fossil fuels. This dependence creates a lot of political complacency, which is killing democracy today in Ukraine and the climate” he concludes .
