“I want to keep quiet”: why does Quentin Dupieux not want to promote his film The Second Act?

How can we talk about a film without talking about the film? This is the difficult exercise faced by the casting of “Deuxième Acte”, the 13th feature film by Quentin Dupieux which opens the Cannes Film Festival.

It’s a film that will be a hit at Cannes and yet you won’t see any promotion around it! For the opening of the 77th edition, which has Greta Gerwig as president, a French feature film was chosen.

Two years after Smoking Makes You Cough, presented in Midnight Screening at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, Quentin Dupieux presents his new comedy with a five-star cast for an event screening!

The prolific French screenwriter and director has the honor of opening the festivities of the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival with The Second Act, carried by Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon and Louis Garrel, who make their first foray into the universe of Quentin Dupieux, and Raphaël Quenard, recently Caesarized, already a regular after his performances in Mandibles, Smoking makes you cough and Yannick, as well as Manuel Guillot.

Lasting 1 hour 16 minutes, The Second Act – which will be released on the same day in all French theaters as its preview presentation, namely Tuesday May 14 – promises a crazy new plot full of twists and turns if we rely on the synopsis:

Florence wants to introduce David, the man she is madly in love with, to her father Guillaume. But David is not attracted to Florence and wants to get rid of her by throwing her into the arms of his friend Willy. The four characters find themselves in a restaurant in the middle of nowhere.

No promotion for the new Dupieux

But for his twelfth feature film, Quentin Dupieux decided not to do any promotion. In fact, the director sent journalists a short note, which you can read below, which explains his intentions:

“Hi all !

Since the release of my first feature film in 2007, I have always taken the time to interact with the press and the public, to clarify my intentions and support the promotion of films, as do almost all filmmakers on this planet.

Recently, the pace of releases has accelerated considerably for me and I have accumulated, without realizing it, a speaking time in the media probably greater than the length of my 12 films combined. A shame.

Today, as THE SECOND ACT, my sixth film in four years, my third in one year, prepares to open the Cannes Film Festival and be released in theaters, I want to keep quiet.

Not out of weariness or pretension, but simply because this film, very talkative, says with well-chosen words everything I want to say and already contains its own analysis in an extremely clear way. It would therefore be pointless in my opinion to listen to a director and his actors paraphrase a film in which everything is constantly said and commented on in real time.

THE SECOND ACT hides absolutely nothing. On the other hand, handing you this object and letting you talk about it in your words is a particularly joyful and exciting moment for all of us. We really look forward to reading your criticisms, comments or insults.

You will notice that this text is boring as rain, but yet the film in question is much less boring. Yet another striking proof that it’s time for me to shut up.

The floor is yours !

It is with these words that we understand why no promotion will be made on the part of Quentin Dupieux or the actors for the release of the film. You will therefore not see interviews with the cast related to the feature film on AlloCiné or other media.

Some of the actors have tried their hand at the exercise in certain shows, like Léa Seydoux and Louis Garrel in C à vous on France 5, or Vincent Lindon in Léa Salamé’s morning show on France Inter.

The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival takes place from May 14 to 25, 2024.

The film “The Second Act” by Quentin Dupieux is released today in cinemas.
