“I went a little crazy”, the director’s revelations about her Oscar race

This Friday March 15, 2024, Justine Triet is the guest of Yann Barthès on the set of Quotidien. The opportunity to look back on his crazy race for the Oscars, a journey very different from the Césars.

Sunday March 10 last, during the Oscars ceremony, Justine Triet picked up the award for best original screenplay for his film Anatomy of a fall. An award obtained after having already received a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival but also two Golden Globes and above all six Caesars. Yet another award for the 45-year-old director, which had to be won.

Indeed, this Friday March 15, 2024, Justine Triet was invited to the set of Daily. The director therefore told Yann Barthès how a campaign to win an Oscar works in the United States. Because it doesn’t look at all like the Caesars, as she explains. To have a chance of winning the precious golden statuette, you must lead a most trying communications campaign.

A political campaign for an Oscar

And Justine Triet’s campaign started last August. “I didn’t know what an American campaign was like. Actually It’s really a political campaign.” explains the director who had to increase the number of meetings between the months of August and March. “And without this campaign, the chance of winning an Oscar is less,” asks Yann Barthès. “That’s what I wonder. I say to myself ‘would it have worked without it?’, Maybe not. I don’t know”, replies the director in complete transparency.

Before adding: “I think it’s much more difficult because people want to meet us, to talk. It’s completely different from Caesar. The Césars are really two or three evenings and that’s it.” And one of the major differences is above all the financial aspect! “There’s not as much money. Finally there are a number of sponsorships, evenings with different prizes. It’s a campaign. I received I don’t know how many prizes before getting this one. It’s actually a race.” explains Justine Triet.

On the verge of burnout

Faced with her story which relates trying months of work, the question naturally arises as to whether Justine Triet appreciated this aspect of her job as a director. “It’s new to me, I’ve never experienced that. Honestly at first I lost my temper a little, in September October. And then afterward I had a little more fun. I figured out how to have fun.”, explains the director.

And fortunately, because obviously this is not the case for everyone. “Neon, the American distributor, said a very funny sentence to me, he said to me ‘don’t worry, we’re going to ask you a lot, at some point people break down, sometimes they go to the hospital, so tell us if you ever feel bad, don’t hesitate to tell us and we’ll take a little break for a week.” says Justine Triet who managed to escape burnout!
