Daniel Auteuil is starring in the film Adieu Monsieur Haffmann, released in cinemas since Wednesday January 12. In the columns of Télé 7 Jours, the actor confided in this role which takes place at the time of the Second World War.
Since Wednesday January 12, Daniel Auteuil is starring in “Farewell Mr. Haffmann”. In the recently released film, the actor, whose life was put on hold for a while, plays Daniel Haffmann, a Jewish jeweler forced to hide in his jewelry store during the Occupation. The actor affirms that it is not the duty of memory, but the artistic choices of the director which pushed him to accept the main role. “The film speaks of this period, in an unprecedented form. That’s what attracted me. Fred Cavayé (…) mixes History and suspense. I was also keen to play with Sarah Girardeau and Gilles Lellouche, talented actors”, he told TV 7 Days.
However, the actor affirms that this duty of memory is essential for him for the future as a citizen. “We must constantly remember that this monstrous past existed, and that even if people would stand up more today, we are not immune to a return of such horror”, he said in the magazine.

When Daniel Auteuil is asked what he would have done during the Occupation period, the actor gives a rather clear-cut answer, accompanied by a reflection that seems to have animated him for several years. “When I was younger, I said to myself: “I don’t know”. Today, I would choose the good side, without necessarily being a hero. I might be on the run”, confessed the actor to the modest but happy childhood.
Daniel Auteuil affirms that he would have taken the example of his two parents, who lived through this particularly macabre period during which the lack of food was as present as fear. “My parents experienced it, I would probably have done like them. Shut my mouth when necessary, but never make a pact”, said the actor, who made touching secrets about his childhood and his relationship with his mother.
