Ian Mitchell: ex-member of the Bay City Rollers is dead

The British band Bay City Rollers mourn their former member Ian Mitchell. The bassist died at the age of 62.

Musician Ian Mitchell has died at the age of 62. This was announced by his former band Bay City Rollers on their Facebook page. "We are deeply saddened by Ian Mitchell's death. Our thoughts and prayers go with his wife, Wendy, family and friends. Rest in peace, Ian," the statement said. Mitchell joined the Scottish band in 1976 at the age of 17. He replaced bassist and founding member Alan Longmuir (1948-2018).

Mitchell left the band after nine months and returned to his native Northern Ireland, where he joined the band Rosetta Stone. In the Rollers he was replaced by Pat McGlynn. With the Bay City Rollers, Mitchell released the album "Dedication" and a successful cover version of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want to Be With You". In the 1970s the band, which the two Longmuir brothers founded in Edinburgh in 1966, was also responsible for hits such as "Bye Bye Baby" and "Shang-a-Lang".
