Ice Hockey World Championship on Tuesday – Canada secures second place – Germany challenges Switzerland – Sport

  • Thanks to a 5-0 win against France, Germany is in the quarter-finals of the World Cup and is Switzerland’s opponent there.

Group A

Germany 5-0 France – Switzerland’s opponents in the quarter-finals are known: the national team will meet Germany on Thursday. The DEB selection won their last group match against France 5-0 and finished fourth to secure their place in the knockout stage. The team coached by Harold Kreis was clearly superior to the French. Alexander Ehl and Frederik Tiffels gave the Germans a 2-0 lead in the first third. John Peterka, Daniel Fischbuch and Maximilian Kastner were responsible for the final result with their goals.

Sweden – USA 3:4 aet – In the top game of Group A, the USA secured the group victory against Sweden. Although the USA gave up points for the first time at this World Cup, they still managed to win the game in overtime. Dylan Samberg scored the decisive goal via the inside of the post in the 62nd minute. For a long time it had looked like an unchallenged victory for the North Americans. David Quinn’s side were comfortably ahead 3-1 just before the end before Leo Carlsson (55′) and Timothy Liljegren (58′) equalized the game for the Swedes. The Americans will meet either the Czech Republic, Latvia or Slovakia in the quarter-finals, while either the Latvians or the Czech Republic are waiting for the Swedes.

Finland 7-1 Denmark The Finns roll over Denmark in the last group game. The hosts won the Nordic duel with 7:1. With 3 goals in the first third, Finland laid the foundation for the triumph early on. Three more goals followed in the middle third – Juho Lammiko from the ZSC Lions even scored with a shorthander. Nikolaj Ehlers, son of Heinz Ehlers, scored the consolation goal for the Danes just seconds after the Finns had increased to 7:0. For the Danes it was already clear before the game that they couldn’t go any further. Canada is waiting for Finland in the quarter-finals.

Group B

Canada – Czech Republic 3:1 – Thanks to the victory over the Czechs, Canada has secured second place behind Switzerland. 48 seconds before the end of the 1st period, Peyton Krebs put the Canadians in front. After Martin Kaut equalized (23′), it was Tylers Myers (45′) and Lawson Crouse (60’/into an empty goal) who ensured the victory for the “maple leaves” in the final section. The Canadians meet co-hosts Finland in Thursday’s quarter-finals.

Slovakia 4-1 Norway – Slovakia can continue to hope for the quarter-finals. Thanks to the 4-1 victory at the end of the group stage, the Slovaks advanced to fourth place. Marek Hrivik, Peter Cehlarik and Robert Lantosi ensured a 3-0 lead in the first period. Markus Vikingstad could only shorten for Norway. Richard Panik scored the final result. Slovakia must now hope for Switzerland. If Latvia gets a point against Nati on Tuesday evening, the hosts are through. If the Latvians lose after 60 minutes, the Slovaks would be in the round of 8 because they won the direct duel.
