This new setting will further secure the data saved on iCloudbut will require some effort from you to avoid any problems in the future.

Apple may present itself as the white knight of respect for privacy, all is not perfect in the ecosystem set up by the brand.

iOS 16.2 lets you encrypt almost all your iCloud data

iCloud backups have regularly been singled out by defenders of individual freedoms. Indeed, if iCloud encrypts your health data or your means of payment integrated with Apple Pay from end to end, your messages, photos or even your notes are not encrypted when your data is saved on iCloud.

Apple explained until then that end-to-end encryption of this data can pose a problem for a user who has lost his access to iCloud, and therefore to his data. Apple does not have the key to decipher its information, it is impossible for it to help its client to recover a backup.

With iOS 16.2, available in the coming days, Apple will leave the choice to users wishing to secure all of their data by fully encrypting it.

The option will not be enabled by default, and iCloud mails, calendars and contacts will be excluded from encryption. Apple indicates for these three categories to act in this way to guarantee interoperability between its services and third-party software.

How to enable encryption of your iCloud backups?

To activate the option, go to the settings of your device, then click on the tab at the top of the list, with your name and your profile photo. Then tap on the “iCloud” option, then at the bottom of the page, tap on “Advanced data protection”.

To recover your data in the event of a problem, you will have the choice between two options. The first is to select a “trusted contact” from your list of friends with an Apple device. When recovering your data, a code will be sent to your loved one’s iPhone or iPad, and you will need to enter it during the recovery process to find your backup. A message will be sent to your “trusted contact” so that he agrees to retrieve a backup code for you, you will then be notified by a notification.

The other method is to obtain and print a 28-character recovery key to keep in a safe place. The latter will be required when recovering from an iCloud backup.

Finally, note that backup encryption will not be available immediately in Europe. Our American friends will get a sneak peek at the launch of iOS 16.2, which should take place around December 12 or 13. Apple promises deployment in our latitudes for the beginning of 2023, without providing further details.

iCloud

  • Deep integration into Apple devices
  • Ease of use
  • Sharing between Apple users

iCloud is a cloud storage and synchronization service conceived and designed almost exclusively for Apple terminals. It is an extremely easy to use service that offers storage space at attractive prices. Its synchronization and sharing features between Macs, iPhones and iPads are quite remarkable and provide real comfort in everyday use. Outside of Apple’s ecosystem, iCloud, on the other hand, has no interest.

For identical or very similar prices, competing cloud services such as Dropbox, pCloud or Google Drive offer many more features for working on documents, sharing content, playing multimedia files, etc. So many possibilities that iCloud reserves to a lesser extent only for Apple users…
