ID.1: Volkswagen’s €20,000 electric city car will arrive in 2027

After an electric city car at €25,000 excluding bonuses in 2026, Volkswagen will launch a mini-city car even €5,000 cheaper. This challenge is not simple since producing a profitable €20,000 car is no longer so easy, and what’s more, it’s 100% electric.

Volkswagen had therefore entered into discussions with Renault to possibly pool the development of its electric mini-city car with that of the next electric Twingo, which is also targeting a price excluding bonuses of around €20,000. However, the two groups have abandoned their discussions and the two cars will thus be developed separately, we learned only a few days ago.

But Volkswagen wants to assure the public that its project remains on the right track, by publishing a first sketch of the model and confirming its arrival in 2027. The lines are more slender than the late e-up!, of which this new model should take over. positioning.

A technical sheet still unknown

Despite the publication of this first sketch, we suspect that the one we nickname “ID.1”, although it should not use this name, is still very little advanced in its development. Its technical platform is not yet known, while the MEB Entry of its big sister “ID.2” would be too expensive. It is therefore still too early to speculate on its technical sheet.

This mini-city car will be produced in Europe, Volkswagen guarantees. Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the brand, however indicates that “this project of electromobility produced in Europe, for Europe can only succeed with the support of political powers and under competitive conditions.”
