As expected, this decision led to a resurgence of impersonated identities. Many fake accounts in the name and colors of well-known companies have appeared to distill false information. If, for many, it was just jokes, some tweets caused the stock prices of several brands to fall for a few hours, so successful was the imitation.
The X.com teams (the new name for Twitter) are therefore at work to correct the situation, and according to Nima Owji, an independent researcher, the social network is testing an identity authentication system to bring some order to this great mess.
A vain and hypocritical attempt to correct the situation
The man shared a snapshot of what is believed to be a draft of the verification tool. X.com would ask the user to show their smartphone camera a valid photo ID and then take a selfie for the system to analyze the matches between the two images. This system is nothing new, it is also the one found today on various services or with online banks.
To ensure verification, X.com would have called on a subcontractor, Au10tix. After research, this company is not known for data leakage problems, a good thing, especially when one has to share personal data as sensitive as an identity card or a passport.
This authentication of identities does not currently have a precise launch date, and it will take several more weeks to see it appear, unless Elon Musk decides to put the cart before the horse, as he often does. habit.
Will it solve all the problems X.com has today? No. Identity verification should indeed be an optional option, offered to users at their discretion. Elon Musk obviously does not want to alienate his community, and we should see parody accounts and other trolls flourish on the social network for a long time to come.
