If Baldur’s Gate 3 were a series, Game of Thrones wouldn’t last the distance

If we compile all the cutscenes of Baldur’s Gate 3we obtain a duration twice as long as the entire series Game Of Thrones. Data which further supports the richness and density of the RPG voted game of the year 2023.

A little over 70 hours: this is the total duration of the series Game Of Thrones, spread over 73 episodes and eight seasons. For a full marathon, you will need a little less than three days, with a few breaks to sleep and digest the story. This is a more than respectable length for this work of fantasy.

Imagine that there is much longer. During a panel organized as part of the Game Developers Conference (GDC), Swen Vincke, the founder of Larian Studios, declared that the accumulation of cutscenes from Baldur’s Gate 3 was twice as high, in comments reported by IGN on March 21.

This means all the purely narrative phases of Baldur’s Gate 3 last over 140 hours when placed end to end. It’s colossal and this figure further supports the density and richness of an RPG that everyone agreed on in 2023 (and logically continues to fascinate in 2024). It’s not for nothing that it was logically voted game of the year last December.

A crazy comparison? That would be a bit hasty. Face to face is not absurd. On the one hand, video games also belong to the world of fantasy. And, if we put all the scripted sequences of the game end to end, we obtain a story that holds together overall. We can very well enjoy it as a TV series.

Baldur’s Gate 3it’s also three times as many words as the Lord of the Rings trilogy

To stay within legitimate comparisons (other massive works of fantasy), Swen Vincke confided that Baldur’s Gate 3 has three times more words than the trilogy of Lord of the Rings, in its written version. Tolkien’s work is over 450,000 words long, which means that Baldur’s Gate 3 would exceed 1.3 million. Again, this is a rather implausible statistic.

However, the comparison with The Lord of the Rings : Tolkien was alone to put down the fruit of his imagination and blacken entire pages. Obviously, there were several screenwriters mobilized to write the story of Baldur’s Gate 3 and consider different branches which depend on the choices of the player.

In view of the work accomplished, which truly honors the universe Dungeons & Dragons, we understand why Larian Studios wants to move on. The studio has announced that there will be no expansion for Baldur’s Gate 3 and that he will not develop a possible Baldur’s Gate 4. Either way, the core content is rich enough to keep you busy for years and years.
