“If hundreds of thousands come…”: Slovakia declares itself open to all refugees

“If hundreds of thousands come…”
Slovakia declares itself open to all refugees

Hundreds of thousands are fleeing Ukraine hoping for support, and many more are expected in the near future. Neighboring country Slovakia has now decided to accept refugees indefinitely and is showing its willingness to help. Come what may.

According to Defense Minister Jaroslav Nad, Slovakia is ready to take in unlimited refugees from neighboring Ukraine. In an interview with the TV news channel TA3, the conservative politician said: “This is war, and we treat our fellow Ukrainian people, with whom we have never had any problems, humanely and responsibly. If hundreds of thousands come, then we’ll take care of hundreds of thousands.”

According to the Interior Ministry in Bratislava, 25,935 people came to Slovakia from Thursday to Sunday morning.

President Zuzana Caputova said during a visit to refugee reception facilities at the Slovak-Ukrainian border crossing at Ubla that Russian President Vladimir Putin bears full responsibility for all victims in Ukraine. For Ukraine, she called for EU accession prospects. Russia threatens not only Ukraine’s territorial integrity, but also democratic values. “In that sense, Ukraine is also fighting for us and deserves a clear signal of acceptance,” said Caputova.
