Who doesn’t dream of winning the lottery? No need to work or worry about money anymore. Winning the lottery is the promise of a life of lightness, without setting an alarm and with the possibility of going on vacation whenever you want, on the other side of the world, preferably on a heavenly beach. You may also imagine take full advantage of this new life with your other half, toes fanned out.

Yet, winning the lottery would not be so beneficial for couples. Maybe you have the film The list of my desires with Mathilde Seigner and Marc Lavoine in the main roles. This film perfectly illustrates the following observation: people who win the lottery actually want to change their lives but also partners. To come to this conclusion, we did not ask all the lottery winners about their married life.

Money as the first reason not to divorce

On the other hand, the online savings manager Yomoni carried out the investigation. 2,165 people were interviewed as part of this study. And the first observation is that 49% of married people do not divorce due to lack of money. A very high figure which can be explained by the fact that the French think that a divorce costs much more than its real price.

For example, 35% of those questioned think that it is necessary to pay between 8,000 and 10,000 euros for a contentious divorce through legal proceedings. And for a divorce by mutual consent, respondents think it costs between 6 and 8,000 euros when in reality you have to spend between 1 and 4,000 euros. As mentioned previously, 49% of French people say they do not divorce due to lack of money. For 47%, the obstacle is linked to memories and the connections made and 40% fear loneliness.

47% of couples ready to divorce if they win the lottery

The study results don’t stop there. Since money is a barrier to divorce, Yomoni asked respondents what they would do in the event of an unprecedented gain. And the observation is clear since Nearly 1 in 2 French people (47%) admit that they would want to divorce to change their life if they suddenly became very rich!

An observation that is true across all generations. In fact, 51% of people from Generation X say they are ready to leave their significant other after winning the lottery. As for people from Generation Z with only, the figure drops slightly with 43% who ensure the same thing. Also note that more than 15% of French people did not wish to comment on this question. An interesting study that raises many questions…
