Apple would change the material of its future iPhone top-of-the-range, with the consequence of drastically increasing the bill paid by the end consumer.

The iPhone has never been a cheap product, and this year the prices charged by Apple have been particularly steep.

Apple is now charging its latest iPhones at full price

The world is the victim of generalized inflation, caused by several factors such as the low availability of semiconductors, the war in Ukraine, the increase in the cost of energy and certain raw materials, not to mention the fall in euro against the dollar.

These various crises have an impact on the prices of all consumer goods and Apple’s hand did not shake when the prices of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro were announced.

Not a single new iPhone is today offered for less than 1,000 euros, with increases of between 100 and 200 euros per model. The iPhone 14 Pro Max wins the prize for this price increase with a price of 1,469 euros for the 128 GB version and 2,129 euros for the 1 TB version.

These very high prices do not seem to have discouraged fans of the brand, however. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is currently the best-selling iPhone in this 2022 lineup, with delivery times of several weeks.

An iPhone 15 Ultra would ditch stainless steel for titanium

Apple would not stop there with the iPhone 15 Ultra. This next generation of smartphone, which should logically be released in 2023, would take the place of the iPhone 14 Pro Max and would be the most advanced iPhone in the range, like the Apple Watch Ultra for the Apple Watch .

For this version, Apple would consider replacing the stainless steel used for the edges of the device with titanium, reinforced with an oleophobic treatment to reduce fingerprints. This material, also used on the Apple Watch Ultra, has the advantage of being both more resistant and lighter, but it is also much more expensive.

As our colleagues from 01Net, a kilo of titanium is traded between 35 and 50 dollars, against 1.5 dollars for a kilo of steel. We can therefore expect an iPhone with a very high manufacturing cost, which would affect the consumer’s bill.

The iPhone 15 Ultra could also offer a new design, if we refer to the three-year cycle put in place by Apple. The iPhone 12, in 2020, had a new look with flat edges and this new device could therefore benefit from a complete facelift, in addition to the adoption of a USB-C port and the definitive abandonment of Lightning.
