A Graphic card whose connector, melted, is no longer usable, this should not happen. For the RTX 4000, it’s ancient history, in any case.

No doubt you have not forgotten this famous 12VHPWR connector introduced by NVIDIA and which caused so much ink to flow after leaking a little melted plastic onto some unlucky users?

Following a few reports of melted sockets, or even graphics cards simply out of service, some players decided to rethink said connector. Good pick, apparently.

Temperatures perfectly under control

Relayed by our colleagues from VideoCardzthe specialized media Hardware Busters went to visit Linewell, the company in charge of all power cables for the giant ASUS and others.

Linewell has therefore manufactured the new connector/cable called 12V-2×6, which some present as more secure, and less subject to heat strokes and other untimely melting. Rather than taking the manufacturers’ word for it, Hardware Busters went to the source to test the product.

First observation, the rise in temperature on the connector seems completely “under control”: we are talking about 46.5°C. Maintaining the connector below 50°C when it comes to 55 amps and 640 watts is reassuring.

Indeed, it is hard to imagine a connector at this temperature level melting, and the same goes for the cable whose temperature did not exceed 41°C over the entire duration of the test carried out.

A connector that stays in place

Furthermore, the new connector/cable also had to be more secure in the event of misuse. Despite reports to the contrary, it did appear that the cases of melting were mainly linked to poor insertion of the connector. Incorrect insertion leading to a short circuit and uncontrolled heating.

In the case of the 12V-2×6 connector, there is a control pin which can determine if the connector has been incorrectly inserted in order to reduce the power delivered. Our colleagues indicate that according to their tests, everything is going well in the best of all possible worlds. The sense pins were deliberately shorted without leading to any problems.

Better yet, several tests were conducted to determine whether the connector was likely to come loose after being mistreated. Twisted in all directions and handled “vigorously”, the cable did not move.

At Clubic, we have handled the RTX 4000 quite a bit, and we have never (yet?) encountered this melting problem. Still, to avoid taking any risks, you might as well buy an RTX 4000 equipped with this 12V-2×6 connector rather than the now defunct 12VHPWR. This should be the case on all commercial cards, but keep your eyes peeled.
