Ahead of the IFA Berlin show, Lenovo announced a slew of devices including laptops, tablets, Chromebooks and monitors. And, first, a pair of glasses to display a virtual screen.

Glasses T1 smart glasses

They won’t be available outside of China until 2023, but the Lenovo Glasses T1 (which will be called Lenovo Yoga Glasses in China) already look set to turn heads at IFA. Described as a “portable private display for consuming content on the go”, these glasses are compatible with USB-C equipped smartphones, tablets and laptops, and will connect to Lightning equipped iOS devices via adapters.

Resembling a real pair of glasses, the Glasses T1 are equipped with interchangeable nose clips and adjustable temples to optimize comfort. They also support custom corrective lenses with a removable frame. The branches also accommodate a pair of speakers, as well as buttons for adjusting the volume, screen brightness and color temperature. The virtual screen, which can be anchored to a fixed point in space or move with your head, is provided by micro-OLED technology with a resolution of 1080 pixels per eye, a refresh rate of 60 Hz and a 10:000:1 contrast ratio.

Glasses T1 can be used in particular for mobile games, but they will also give professionals on the move the possibility of having a “personal monitor in their pocket”. They also have privacy benefits: “By using Lenovo Glasses T1, workers have a private workspace to avoid ‘shoulder surfing’,” says Lenovo.

The removable back cover is made from 100% recycled performance fabric, and post-consumer materials are used in the speaker enclosures, power supplies, and compostable outer packaging.

This versatile foldable device supports multiple modes of operation, under the guidance of Lenovo’s Mode Switcher interface: classic clamshell mode with a 12-inch main screen and a virtual or physical keyboard at the bottom; landscape or portrait mode with the 16.3-inch screen fully unfolded and placed on a magnetic mounting support; and two handheld modes – book and tablet.

The new ThinkPad X1 Fold is also the first to integrate an improved version of Intel’s Visual Sensing Controller (VSC), which manages the 5 MP webcam to provide automatic framing, “wake-on-approach” authentication, the “walk-away-lock” and “onlooker detection”, among other useful functions.
