Île-de-France: the region concentrates a third of the thefts committed in the country’s public transport

No less than 116,430 people were victims of theft and violence in public transport in the country in 2020, according to figures released by the Ministry of the Interior on Tuesday, December 21. A third of these incidents were recorded in Ile-de-France, the region most affected by this crime.

“Ile-de-France, with a particularly developed public transport network, concentrates two thirds of the attacks enumerated”, advances the report of the Ministry of the Interior, which attests that in 2020, “a theft without violence out of three ”was committed in public transport in the Ile-de-France region.

A crime that mainly takes place in the metro (RATP and SNCF network), according to police and gendarmerie figures in Ile-de-France, while, in the rest of France, attacks take place more frequently in the surface network (bus and tram).

DEs down 30%

In fact, 63,128 thefts without violence, 8,574 robberies with violence and 676 sexual assaults were committed in public transport in the Ile-de-France region in 2020. This is 30% less on average than the previous year, when there were 89,905 thefts. without violence, 8,888 violent robberies and 997 sexual assaults.

And even if the figures for this crime fell sharply between 2019 and 2020, the drop in victims is less marked in the capital region than that in the use of public transport. In 2020, there are 29 victims of theft and violence per million trips, compared to 22 in 2019.

In Ile-de-France as in the rest of the country, thefts without violence constitute the most characteristic attack of delinquency in public transport. Indeed representing 80% of victims of theft and violence in public transport.

Women and young people most affected

Unsurprisingly, the majority of victims of these thefts and violence are women (56%), regardless of the assault. However, when it comes to sexual violence, 94% of victims are women, more than a third of whom are minors.

Another notable fact according to this report: 18-29 year olds represent a third of the victims recorded in public transport while they represent only 14% of the population.

Finally, the victims are mostly of French nationality (78%). In the context of a sharp decline in tourism in 2020, the victims from Europe, Asia or America were logically fewer. On the other hand, this is not the case for those from Africa.
