Île-de-France: the sale and transport of fireworks and fuels prohibited during the holidays

No fireworks this year. Particularly regulated, the acquisition and possession of fireworks as well as the distribution of fuel in individual containers by individuals will be prohibited during the end of the year celebrations, communicated the Paris Police Prefecture (PP) on Monday 20 September.

“As every year, the end-of-year celebrations will be the subject of enhanced security accompanied by preventive and anticipatory measures throughout the Ile-de-France”, thus indicated the PP, announcing that the prefect of police had issued a decree prohibiting “the transfer (for consideration or not) and the transport of fireworks” as well as “the distribution of fuel in individual containers as well as their transport by individuals”.

From December 24 to January 3

This decree will take effect from Friday, December 24, 2021, at 8 p.m., and will last until Monday, January 3, 2022, at 8 a.m., in the capital but also throughout the Ile-de-France region. Unannounced checks could thus be carried out by the police, in order to enforce these measures which essentially aim, according to the PP, to avoid “the risks of disturbances to public order generated by the misuse of certain devices” .

An announcement made on Monday, when a decree has just been published in the Official Journal (JO) about suspicious purchases of fireworks mortars. From that day, these pyrotechnic devices – often diverted by delinquents to attack the police – will now have to be reported to the Ministry of the Interior.

Any business guilty “of not reporting suspicious transactions” concerning these fireworks of the F2 and F3 category will now be liable to a 5th class fine, that is to say a fine of 1,000 euros, thus communicated the Ministry of Interior.

In fact, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin had announced his desire to prohibit by law the sale to the public of these fireworks mortars, in particular after the attack on the Champigny-sur-Marne police station (94) in October 2020.

Fireworks mortars are “weapons by destination”, he said at the time. And to add: “they can hurt, they can kill and today we must stop this sale on the internet, this sale which is not intended for professionals and that we penalize it”.
