The tragic death of his son at birth throws Cristiano Ronaldo off course. The superstar paused during his Manchester United game against Liverpool FC. But the fans think of him – even the rivals. The Portuguese thanks him for that.
Rivalries fade into the background: soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United has thanked the fans of opponent FC Liverpool for their support after the death of his newborn son. “Thank you Anfield. Me and my family will never forget this moment of respect and compassion,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram, posting a video of the spectators’ grand gesture at the stadium.
The fans of the Reds and Manchester United rose from their seats together in the seventh minute of Tuesday’s Premier League game – based on Ronaldo’s jersey number – and applauded for 60 seconds, and they also voted the legendary “You’ll never walk alone”.
“That was my moment of the game,” said Liverpool team manager Jürgen Klopp: “The fans showed great class there. There are so many things in life that are much more important than football, we feel for Cristiano and his family.”
The five-time world footballer Ronaldo informed his partner Georgina Rodriguez about the loss of their newborn son on Monday evening. While a girl was born safe, her twin brother died at or shortly after birth. “The whole team, the whole club is with him,” said his coach Ralf Rangnick: “It was clear to me that he had to be where he is: with his family.”
