German track four pulverizes world record

The German women’s four-man team is not yet sure of a medal, but an entry in the history books of cycling: In qualifying, the team manages a sensational run. However, it still has to be refined. The team sprinters are one step further.

The women’s four-man sensationally set a world record at the Olympic track cycling competitions. Franziska Brauße, Lisa Brennauer, Lisa Klein and Mieke Kröger drove in Izu in the qualification 4: 07.307 minutes and improved the old fabulous time of the British women by almost three seconds. This means that the German team has a good chance of reaching the final of the two best teams. In the next round, a win against the Italians, who were almost four seconds slower in qualifying, is enough. The British team (4: 09.022) came closest to the German time.

“We had a really good day. We already knew from training that it was possible. I said to the girls: ‘It’s my dream to see that on the scoreboard upstairs.’ And then we implemented it. We are super proud and take that with us as motivation for tomorrow, “said Lisa Brennauer and added:” You can always dream. We want to go through the race with the same concentration and then everything is possible. ”

When the world record time in the Izu Velodrome was stopped, Brennauer clenched his fist to the great cheer of around 1000 spectators. In contrast to the competitions in Tokyo, spectators are allowed in Izu. “I have to cry,” said ZDF expert Kristina Vogel. “The four girls gave so much gas right from the start. Driving the last kilometer in under a minute is indescribable. I’m really on cloud nine at the moment.” The next round will be played on Tuesday (8.30 a.m. CEST). On the very fast track, the fresh world record could then be attacked again.

The two world champions Lea Sophie Friedrich and Emma Hinze are meanwhile in the finals of the Olympic track cycling competitions. The duo defeated the two Ukrainians Lyubow Bassowa and Olena Starikowa in 31.905 seconds with the second fastest time at the Izu Velodrome. In the final they will now meet the Chinese Bao Shanju and Zhong Tianshi, who set a world record of 31,804. But Hinze and Friedrich are sure to be silver.

The duo improved the German record twice in the morning. Record world champions Kristina Vogel and Miriam Welte held the old best time. Friedrich and Hinze won gold together with Pauline Grabosch at the 2020 World Cup in Berlin.
