The desktop counterpart of the M1 Max chip
would be equipped with a maximum of 12 cores instead of the 10 cores currently inherited by Apple’s SoC on the MacBook Pro 2021
.

The M1 Max chip had already made a strong impression for its performance on the 2021 MacBook Pros. We learned this week that it could return in an even more powerful version on the future iMac Pro, mentioned by persistent rumors for a few months, and which should be presented by Apple next June.

Up to 12 cores optional?

As often, the info comes to us from a leaker and therefore deserves to be taken with all the necessary hindsight, but in the desktop version, the M1 Max chip could count on a maximum of 12 cores as an option. Its current mobile version is limited to 10 cores, grouped as follows: 8 high-performance cores and 2 efficient cores.

On a desktop computer, the M1 Max chip will not have to worry about energy saving as much as on a laptop. We can therefore imagine that it will take advantage of 10 high-performance cores and 2 low-power cores. Note that this 12-core variant will probably be offered as an option on the high-end versions of a potential iMac Pro.
