After the controversy that shook Paris Saint-Germain following the broadcast of a promotional video for the club concerning the subscription campaign for next season, the Minister of Sports Amélie Oudéa-Castéra reacted. She was understanding and mentioned image rights in the France team.

“Not Kylian Saint-Germain”: Frenchman Kylian Mbappé expressed his disagreement on Thursday with the use of his image for the renewal campaign for the 2023-2024 season of Paris Saint-Germain, already mired in a sporting crisis. Special guest of the show Europe 1 Sport (every evening from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. live on Europe 1), Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra expressed her support for the top scorer in the history of PSG.

Late Thursday afternoon, the video, which was to be intended only for Parc des Princes subscribers, was visible on YouTube, where it is displayed as “unlisted” and therefore not available in search results. It had been made unavailable Thursday afternoon before being unavailable again, without modifications. Kylian Mbappé had stepped up to the plate on social networks a few hours earlier. He criticized the management of the Parisian club for having made a video putting him too much forward, erasing the rest of the team. Neymar and Lionel Messi do not appear in the clip.

Before France-Greece

And even if this new internal crisis raises several debates, the Minister of Sports has pointed to one in this case: that of image rights. In September 2022, the PSG striker had already threatened to boycott a photo session in the France team when the convention left the ability to sponsors of the FFF to use the images of international players which was not to the taste of the principal concerned. Amélie Oudéa-Castéra was delighted that the French “is very sensitive to this question”.

“That Kylian Mbappé is sensitive to the problem of image rights at PSG is normal. In the France team, this problem must be dealt with before France-Greece” in June, a match counting for qualifying for the Euro 2024. “We know that there are different issues” such as the question of digital and NFT. For Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, “this framework must be modernized” in the very short term. Players wanting more control over their image in a context where the sale of exclusive images on digital is experiencing strong growth.
