Image rights: the Blues offer the French Federation a revised agreement

The players of the France team submitted this Wednesday a modified draft of their convention of rights to the image of internationals, to the president of the French Football Federation. The current 12-year-old convention has been heavily criticized in recent months by players, who now want to have a word on their sponsors.

The players of the France team on Wednesday submitted a modified draft convention of image rights for internationals to the president of the French Football Federation (FFF), Noël Le Graët, they announced in a press release sent to the AFP. The Blues, represented by their captain Hugo Lloris, would like the new text to come into force in January 2023, after the World Cup in Qatar (November 20-December 18).

Changing the rules with sponsors

The proposed document reduces the duration of the agreement “to two years”, and also returns to “the clarification of the rights of the FFF on the collective image of the French team” but also on the “right of each player on his individual picture”. “The players of the France team, through their captain, today (Wednesday) submitted to the president of the FFF a modified draft agreement uniting each player with his federation”, explains the press release.

The current agreement, twelve years old, no longer suits the Blues. They had made it known together for the first time last March when Kylian Mbappé had questioned his participation in certain advertising operations. In September, the Paris Saint-Germain star regretted that the project was not moving forward, and the same day Noël Le Graët promised to “revise” the agreement “as soon as possible”. Players want to be able to choose the companies they represent or not in selection, whether for their personal convictions or in the event of a conflict between an individual sponsor and a sponsor of the France team.

Change expected in 2023

The current agreement dates from 2010, it was signed after the Knysna scandal, strike of the players of the French team in the middle of the World Cup, which had prompted the FFF to develop a rigorous text on the representation of internationals . Ongoing commitments with sponsors make it impossible to change the agreement before the World Cup in Qatar, but the players expect change in 2023.

They want the duration “to be increased to two years in order to be able to be adapted at the end of each major competition (World Cup and Euro)”, specifies their press release.
