Images of the earthquakes that killed thousands in Syria and Turkey

It was a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that woke up parts of Turkey and Syria on the night of February 5 to 6. In the middle of the night, at 4:17 a.m. local time, a violent earthquake struck the two countries from the epicenter located in Pazarcik, at the junction between three tectonic plates.

The provisional death toll from the earthquake reached 1,900 at midday on February 6, but it is expected to rise in the coming days.

Civilians and relief are indeed hard at work to extract victims of the tremors trapped under the rubble of the many buildings that have collapsed. For Turkey, it is the most violent earthquake since that of August 17, 1999, which killed 17,000 people, including a thousand in Istanbul.
