Immigration from South Tyrol – Two bears in the Lower Engadine caught in a photo trap – News

  • In mid-July, bears were photographed with camera traps in the Lower Engadine.
  • The cantonal office for hunting and fishing received the photos from a hunter and confirmed the bear sighting.

In the canton of Graubünden, it is assumed that there are two different animals. For the head of the hunting office, Adrian Arquint, the appearance of the animals is nothing unusual: “It actually happens every year that bears come from Italy across the border,” he told SRF News.

The sightings with the photo traps took place on the morning of July 17 in the Val S-charl near Scuol (GR) and in the evening in the Val d’Assa near Ramosch (GR) in the Lower Engadine, as “Südostschweiz” first reported. Arno Puorger, large carnivore officer at the hunting office, told the newspaper that the bears had migrated from South Tyrol. They are probably male animals, as has been the case in recent years.

There has been no further evidence of bears since the camera trap images were taken in mid-July. A bear was captured by a wildlife camera in the Lower Engadine on June 11th.
