While the number of illegal entries into European territory has increased by 17% since the start of the year, several countries want to toughen up their tone. Germany is notably in the process of putting in place measures to accelerate the expulsions of undocumented immigrants.
The migration issue is at the heart of a meeting of the 27 member states of the European Union. And it’s a bit every man for himself. With one observation, that of the increase in illegal immigration over the first nine months of the year, with an increase of 17%. Several member countries want to toughen their tone, starting with Germany which has just accelerated expulsion measures for undocumented immigrants.
For the German Interior Minister, it is impossible to protect the fundamental right to asylum of victims of war and terrorism without tracking down and returning the others, the illegal migrants. This involves extending the maximum period of detention before expulsion from 10 to 28 days. They will take place without warning, except for families with children under 12 years old.
Hunt down the smugglers
The possibilities for searches in apartments and accommodation centers will be expanded, detailed Nancy Faeser, who is carrying the bill. “Whoever does not have the right to stay must leave our country. Our new regulations will improve the possibilities of repatriation in a large number of cases. It is particularly important for me to expel criminals and threatening people in the most consistent manner and the fastest.”
A priority for the minister: chasing down smugglers, the source, according to her, of illegal immigration. Penalties will be harsher and those sentenced to at least a year in prison could be directly deported.
