Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne continues discussions to try to bring about a compromise on the immigration law before the convening of the Joint Commission scheduled for Monday. And while negotiations are slipping with the Republicans, the head of government has been forced to reorganize certain ministers.
Meetings that follow one another and, sometimes, tempers that get heated. While Elisabeth Borne is increasing consultations with the right and the majority, in the hope of reaching a compromise on the immigration law, the recent declarations of Bruno Le Maire would have provoked a clarification from the Prime Minister. This would reproach its Minister of the Economy, in an exchange reported by Pointhis appeal from the Senate text.
A refocusing of all the troops
The host of Matignon, who leans more to the left, would obviously not have supported Bruno Le Maire calling for recognition of the majority’s defeat. During a meeting with parliamentarians from her camp, Elisabeth Borne would therefore have made a confidence. “I called Bruno Le Maire and reminded him that the deficit in 2023 amounted to 4.9% of GDP and that it had to be reduced to 4.4% in 2024 and that it would be good tone to start taking care of it,” she reportedly said Point. The entourage of the Minister of the Economy denies, for its part, the existence of this telephone exchange.
One thing is certain: Elisabeth Borne has made an update to all of her troops. “I invite you not to interfere in the negotiations by giving your opinion in the media.” An exit which was also seen as a criticism of the man who is seen as his potential successor at Matignon. Because this is also what is at stake in these negotiations. In the event of failure with this immigration bill, Elisabeth Borne’s place at the head of government would be more threatened than ever.
