The day after the vote on the rejection motion against the immigration bill, President Emmanuel Macron denounced in the Council of Ministers the “cynicism” and “the game of the worst” of the oppositions. “Yesterday’s vote does not reveal the existence of a replacement majority” but aims “to block the country”, said the head of state, according to a participant.

Emmanuel Macron denounced Tuesday in the Council of Ministers the “cynicism” and “the game of the worst” of the oppositions in their rejection Monday in the National Assembly of the bill on immigration, according to a government source. “Yesterday’s vote does not reveal the existence of a replacement majority” but aims “to block the country”, said the head of state according to this source, denouncing “cynicism”, “the inconsistency” and “the game of the worst played in particular by two government parties which ruled the country for 40 years”, the PS and LR.

The president directly attacked these two parties by also recalling “their refusal to come to Saint-Denis” during the last edition in November of the meetings that he had organized with the political forces “precisely to also talk about immigration”. “Conversely, the government has always reached out and wanted to find compromises. Our compass is efficiency,” he further pleaded, according to a participant.

“Macron salutes Darmanin’s “big work”

“We need a law on integration and immigration” and “we defend the balance of our text,” added the president. “Political forces will have to take their responsibilities on a useful text which a large majority of French people consider to be going in the right direction,” he continued.

After refusing Monday evening the resignation of Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, on the front line on this issue, Emmanuel Macron “saluted” his “hard work” in front of other members of the government.
