The company WordPressspecializing in the creation and management of web content, has just announced the arrival of a formula allowing the purchase of domains which will remain valid for a century.

This formula is designed for families and business documentation.

Build a site that will outlast you

Active for twenty years and regularly updated, WordPress is used by nearly half of the world’s websites. If what the company offers is so popular, it is because it is just as possible to create a complete and complex site as to choose a very simple personal blog. The tools are easy to use, there are templates for easy formatting, in short, WordPress masters its subject.

But the company wants to go further. After offering AI article writing, WordPress announced via a blog post that it was introducing a 100-year plan to allow users to purchase a domain for an entire century. The firm argues that the idea is to allow families to preserve their history, and businesses to document their journey, but this age-old package comes at a cost that is not within the reach of all budgets.

To access the formula over 100 years, you must indeed be able to pay the sum of 38,000 dollars in one go. Against this amount, WordPress provides a century-long domain, automatic backup to the Internet Archive digital library and multiple servers, advanced tools, and 24/7 support.

How to ensure service for a century?

WordPress’ new initiative is having a small effect, but there’s a problem: no one knows what the Internet will look like 100 years from now. The company has not indicated what it intends to do to keep the domains in place and up to date for such a long period of time.

Whether it’s giving a newborn the special gift of a domain and a lifetime home on the web, or something you put in your will to ensure that your website and your history are accessible to future generations, I hope this plan will inspire people to think and build for the long term said Matt Mullenweg, co-creator of WordPress.

The management of domains that are no longer in use was also not addressed in the company’s press release, thus leaving some gray areas on the management of this long-term offer. We hope that the evolutions of the Web will be taken into account, and that the commitment made by the users will not be called into question if necessary.
