Trump’s campaign team is closely monitoring which Republicans are responding to Trump’s impeachment. And which do not express themselves. Just over three hours had elapsed last night since Donald Trump made public the impeachment against himself when his campaign sent out another email summarizing all the support expressed for the ex-president up to that point.
Starting with the Chairman of the House of Representatives, Speaker Kevin McCarthy, to Trump’s reliable Praetorian Guard around MPs Matt Gaetz or Jim Jordan, to Trump’s worst opponent for the Republican presidential candidacy, Ron DeSantis, Trump meticulously listed who said what in support of him or tweeted.
“Too much distraction”
The only notable Republican to have called on Trump to end his campaign that night was former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, who himself would like to become a Republican presidential nominee.
For Trump, of course, the presumption of innocence applies, according to Hutchinson. But that accusation would demand Trump’s full attention, yet would be too distracting. Trump should therefore end his campaign out of respect for the office.
Corresponds to the polls
These reactions correspond pretty much exactly to the results that several of the surveys that are so important in US politics have recently brought to light: a majority of Americans consider the allegations made against Donald Trump to be serious. But that doesn’t stop his followers from sticking with him.
The Republican base will continue to vote for Donald Trump in the primary. And so Donald Trump was probably right when he once boasted that he could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue in New York and shoot someone and he wouldn’t lose a vote.
