reveals its first fruits to us.
After long testing phases, the 64-bit version of Pi OS seems to attribute an impressive performance boost.
Skyrocketing performance
At the beginning of February, a 64-bit version of Pi OS was officially deployed, after a beta launched in 2020. If the arrival of the latter allowed, among other things, better software compatibility, we did not yet know how this contribution would materialize. But a few days after this announcement, the first results are there and one thing is certain: the results are very encouraging.
In fact, the site Phoronix has carried out numerous and serious series of tests in order to really measure the improvement in performance of Raspberry Pi OS 64 bits compared to the Pi OS 32 bits version. And the result is clear: at all levels, the 64-bit version stands out as much more efficient. Encoding and manipulation of images, file compression, blur effects or even audio encoding with or without compression… Everything goes, but the latest version of the system systematically wins.
Based on tests performed by Phoronix, the performance of 64-bit Pi OS would have increased by 48% compared to a 32-bit version. A far from negligible gain that should reassure users of Raspeberry Pi nanocomputers. Note that these tests were carried out on a Raspberry Pi 400 model with 4 GB of RAM.
