Impressive solo ride: Tour winner Vingegaard leaves everyone behind in the Basque Country

Impressive solo ride
Tour winner Vingegaard outperforms everyone in the Basque country

After Tadej Pogacar, Tour de France titleholder Jonas Vingegaard is also in excellent spring form. In the Tour of the Basque Country, the Dane dominated the final stage and drove to victory in a superior manner – in the final section and in the overall standings.

Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard was the first Dane to win the Tour of the Basque Country. In the final of the sixth and final stage around Eibar, the 26-year-old from Team Jumbo-Visma dominated at will. After a challenging 137.8 kilometers around Eibar, he secured his third stage win and defended the leader’s jersey with inimitable ease.

On the final stage, which featured seven climbs and almost 3,500 meters in altitude, the Dane attacked from the field on the Itzua with almost 29 kilometers to go. He passed the remaining riders in the leading group and crossed the finish line as a solo rider 47 seconds ahead of second-placed Briton James Knox (Soudal-Quick Step).

Third place went to the Spaniard Ion Izagirre (Cofidis/+49 seconds), who in the overall classification passed Frenchman David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) in third place. Izagirre’s compatriot Mikel Landa (Bahrain-Victorious) completed the podium in second overall. Landa was 13 seconds behind Vingegaard in the final part of the Tour of the Basque Country – on the final day, the Tour de France fourth in 2017 and 2020 lost another 59 seconds.

Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-hansgrohe), who was meanwhile in the leading group, finished the traditional tour as the best German in 19th place, 5:50 minutes behind the winner. Vingegaard took over the overall standings after the third stage and continued to demonstrate his strong early form.

So there are many indications of another duel with Tadej Pogacar at the Tour de France this summer, who is also in excellent form and recently won the Tour of Flanders. Vingegaard had surprisingly defeated the Slovene in France last year.
