Improved microclimate – Strobachplatz is “out of the asphalt”

In the summer, the city launched a climate ideas competition. A project from Margareten has now been implemented.

Large parts of Vienna’s 5th district are densely built-up, there is little green open space, narrow street spaces and thus a lot of potential for innovative yet simple solutions for more greenery. It is therefore not surprising that the winning project in the “In the smallest of spaces” category came from Margareten and concerns Strobachplatz.

The conclusive reason given by the competition participant: There is a forecourt with three large plane trees, but no place to stay and a lot of ground sealing. The project aims to unseal the floor. Lawns are to be sown and / or raised beds and furniture are to be made available, thus creating a contribution to more greenery and coexistence in a densely built-up area of the district.

Improvement of the microclimate
In the district, too, people were immediately enthusiastic about the design entitled “The New Normal”. In a few weeks, the redesign was planned and the financing was put in place with the help of the city.

In total, around 800 square meters could be unsealed, partly by paving and partly by greening. Granite stone paving was laid between the tree grates and in the area of the square itself. To improve the microclimate and to cool down, there are now plant beds, bushes and tall shrubs. A drinking fountain provides fresh spring water, new seating invites you to linger without consuming.
