Improvement in sight – The delivery times of the most popular car models

When it comes to buying a new car, customers are not exactly in the fast lane at the moment: delivery bottlenecks are still causing long waiting times, sometimes even up to 1.5 years for models that are particularly in demand. But there are signs of an improvement in the situation.

Even if cars are slowed down more and more often in times of increasing environmental awareness – for many people they still convey a feeling of freedom on four wheels. Emotions also accompany the purchase of a car. Because most people don’t treat themselves to a new set of wheels very often in life, this is a special event – but now a project that requires staying power. It can currently still be several months before the vehicle of your dreams is finally available (the waiting times for the most popular models can be found in the graphic below). Missing parts in production, interrupted supply chains and inflation, which was not least driven up by the war in Ukraine burden the market. The tense situation could also be exacerbated by the conflict between China and Taiwan, after all, the island state plays a decisive role in the global chip industry. The situation should improve in the fall. “Many of these problems are not new, but the situation continues to be challenging because the availability of both new and used cars is simply low. The situation should at least improve somewhat in the autumn,” reports Peter Jagersberger. Buying a specific car and picking it up straight away – one is still a long way from such situations. Jagersberger: “The good news is that some of the Hyundai models are currently being delivered.” Overall, however, one cannot draw from the full. “If a customer has a spontaneous need, he has to take what is in stock,” says the Styrian industry representative. Short-term cars for the long waiting time? According to Jagersberger, if a new purchase is pending, it is advisable to plan a lead time and visit the car dealer early . In the car dealerships in Graz, Weiz and Gleisdorf, he and his team try to keep customers mobile with short-term subscriptions if the waiting time for the desired model is too long. There is currently a complete order stop at Ford for the Galaxy, Fiesta and S-Max models. Several millions in sales are missing. As fewer new cars are currently being sold, fewer cars are being traded in. “The supply of used cars is now correspondingly lower,” reports Gerhard Monsberger from Autohaus Porsche Graz-Liebenau. The order books are well filled, but the managing director can still observe a certain reluctance to buy: “Of course, this has to do with the inventory problems.” As a result, several millions of sales would be missing in Styria. Monsberger: “It is positive that the uncertainty is easing a little, the statements about the delivery times are becoming more specific.” The semiconductor shortage would slowly ease somewhat. “Nevertheless, the delivery times take between four months and one year, depending on the brand and individual configuration.” For models that are particularly in demand, you have to expect a waiting time of one and a half years! The graphic shows the delivery times for the models that are currently most popular in Styria: according to Monsberger When it comes to the popularity of Styrian customers, small and compact cars from VW are currently in the lead, which is also due to the better availability of these models. In first place is the Multivan, but the “Bulli”, which is popular with families. Popular electric cars will not be available until 2023. There is also movement in the field of electric vehicles. “However, the plug-in hybrids, the Seat Leon and some Audi models will not be available until next year.” Anyone who wants to drive with electricity in the future will also need a lot of patience.
