Schalke 04 grabs a prominent assistant coach

Surprise in the final spurt of the 2nd Bundesliga: FC Schalke 04 signed Peter Hermann as assistant coach to interim coach Mike Büskens. The 70-year-old worked as Jens Keller’s assistant for the Royal Blues almost ten years ago.
Experience for the fight for promotion: Second division soccer club Schalke 04 brought Peter Hermann into the team as an assistant coach. The 70-year-old is to support interim boss Mike Büskens in the end of the season. Sports director Rouven Schröder hopes that Hermann, who worked at Schalke from 2013 to 2014, will provide “important impetus” for the decisive phase of the current season. “With his experience and his professional qualifications, he will immediately strengthen our staff,” said Schröder: “He was a professional himself, has been working successfully as an assistant coach at the absolute top level for 30 years and has experienced a wide variety of situations in the process.”
Hermann was most recently at the side of Christian Wörn’s assistant coach of the German U20 national team. He intends to return there after the summer. “He has signaled that he would like to stay with us for another year after the summer. At the same time, he would also like to help FC Schalke 04 over the next two months,” said Meikel Schönweitz, head coach of the U-national teams.
During his career, Hermann worked as an assistant coach for record champions Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, among others. He had his most successful time as assistant coach to the legendary Jupp Heynckes at FC Bayern. With the Munich team, Hermann won the Champions League and the championship three times.
At Schalke he assists Büskens together with Matthias Kreutzer and Simon Henzler. The Royal Blues are fourth after 27 match days, one point behind the relegation place and four points behind the direct promotion places. Schalke plays at Dynamo Dresden on Friday.
