Between women and men, inequality is found even in intimacy. A global survey reveals that men masturbate 3 times more than women.

In 2020, the sex toy brand Womanizer launched the International Day of Egalitarian Masturbation, in order to underline the “Masturbatory gender gap” but also, to draw attention to the taboo of female sexuality and the shame that accompanies it. To take stock of the phenomenon and establish a comparison with the results for 2020, the brand commissioned a new survey carried out among 17 countries around the world, last July, for the year 2021.

And the results have fallen. The date on which the difference between men and women begins to widen has changed compared to 2020, going from September 5 in 2020 to August 14, 2021. Before August 14, it is considered that women have not masturbated in 2021. Regarding France, the International Egalitarian Masturbation Day would fall on August 18. 4 days after the global date established on the average of the survey results, from the 17 countries surveyed.“Compared to last year, men masturbate less on average, but women masturbate more”, according to the survey. Indeed, according to the results of 2021, men masturbate 140 times a year (in 2020, 154 times), while women masturbate about 53 times (in 2020, 49 times). But why ?

Masturbation, a taboo subject except … for the women’s press

According to the survey, masturbation is equated with a social imbalance. This practice is still a delicate subject in our societies today. On the other hand, this is by no means the case in the women’s press. Try typing in our search engine “female masturbation”, and you will see for yourself.

Onanism has relaxing virtues, improves concentration and even alleviates menstrual pain, which makes it a favorite subject for the press aimed at women and menstruating people. Also very popular are the accounts dedicated to sexual pleasure on social networks, created mostly by women who, like the women’s press, are pushing back this taboo.

Masturbation and Covid-19, a bad match?

Another interesting point from the Womanizer survey, the reason why men masturbate less could be explained by the restrictions linked to Covid-19. Indeed, Johanna Rief, responsible for the brand’s sexual empowerment, informs that “Men use visual stimuli more often than women when masturbating”. Like these “For example have less time alone at home”, they would not have had enough privacy to indulge in masturbation in front of porn or other imagery.

However, libido is not called into question: it has even increased as much in men as in women compared to 2020. Will it be maintained in 2021?
